The 'Java barb', a specie of ray-finned fish that is widely aqua cultured. A small to medium-sized freshwater Asian carp that inhabits bottom to mid-water in slow flowing or standing waters of lakes, rivers, streams and reservoirs.
It is popular as a food fish particularly suitable for low input pond aquaculture in low-income communities in South and Southeast Asia. Usually cooked as breaded and fried fish, stewed or curried.
